KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic in the city came to a standstill when a late evening thunderstorm triggered flash floods.

Flash floods were reported at about 5.30pm in Damansara Perdana along Jalan PJU/1 near Metropolitan Square, KM1.4 on the KL-Seremban Highway from TUDM to the city centre, and on KM13 on the New Pantai Expressway.

The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) also reported that other affected roads were Jalan Duta, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Cheras, the MRR2 near Taman Connaught and the East-West link near Bandar Permaisuri.

Portions of the Besraya highway were also affected.

However, the SMART tunnel remained open to road users in both directions.

MHA’s Twitter handle @llmtrafik stated that traffic began to ease along the affected roads only at about 10pm.
Motorists caught in the heavy traffic and flash floods took to Twitter to warn others to avoid the affected stretches.

User @adam_lim tweeted a photograph of a road in Sri Serdang which was flooded at about 7pm, while user @silvennia tweeted at 8.30pm that “traffic heading to Kepong both from Penchala and LDP is extremely congested”.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast showed that thunderstorms can be expected in the afternoon until Tuesday.
